About the Artwork

The Glasgow Girls series of mono-print/ mixed media paintings, explore the absence of female creativity and artistic success in art history. My portraits are of women artists who attended the Glasgow School of Art between the 1890s to about 1910. Many of the men studying at the same time went on to have successful careers, and were attributed as the creators of the Glasgow style.

These women were very much contributors to this art movement, but struggled to get private shows or exhibitions of their work and have subsequently not received the same level of celebration or accolade as their male counter parts. My portraits aim to celebrate the forgotten shoulders today’s women artists stand on.
